Caryn - Julie Houghton re Equestrian Balancing Therapy
"I know that most of us ask 'how can I do things better for my horse and myself' and if you are anything like me, it can be quite a quest!
I was intrigued initially because Julie worked/treated both rider and horse simultaneously. AND, more extraordinary than anything else, her philosophy, understanding and respect for all our individuality..........one size does not necessarily fit all! Could things get better I thought?
I decided to put this to the test, I took two of my horses a very long way up to Bridgnorth (from Kent) since I could not wait until she might come down south! I went duly prepared with my 'list of problems' eg resistance on one particular rein, horse not riding a straight line, horse unable to ride into any corner without falling in and bombing off especially if there was any jump in view and so on........and then of course my own issues, balance and stiffness (age and injury related!) along with a huge enthusiasm and desire for transformation (if not salvation!).
Julie was calm, so kind, extremely quick in her observations and demonstrated her lifelong horsemanship easily in her assessment of what I was doing and therefore provoking under me. She explained to me quietly and succinctly what she would like me to do in a way that I could grasp quickly and with no pain either physically or emotionally. This assessment took place alongside of Julie jumping up on her stool so that she was beside me whilst I remained mounted, with various gentle manipulations accessing pressure points she started the process of 'de-blocking' (this is the only way I can describe the process) whatever or wherever I was resistant and then did the same for both Timmy and Ferdy - who I can vouch enjoyed all of this tremendously but standing peacefully with slightly drooping eyelids (always a give away!) until asked to do something to ascertain how the treatment was working.
I came away feeling that for the first time in years, I felt level as I walked. The horses gait had become longer, more relaxed and powerful, having lost that shortstrided choppy-ness, and they were comfortably seeking contact into my hand and happily moving off my leg after one light ask...............nice work for the half an hour or so that we had for each session. I will be taking my 3rd horse Betty to see Julie as well. Maybe though this time I wont have to travel quite so far - but, if I have to, I will! I know now from personal experience that this will be worth it.
As an aside, Julie gave me some invaluable tips/techniques to facilitate the changes that I wanted to keep. I cannot recommend highly enough, the plus factor being that it was a very pleasant experience in all. Julie is gifted in how she senses the flows of energy, and this is something that I do know a little about being a therapist myself. There are lots out there that do not have 'it' coupled with little tolerance or understanding. Julie has 'it' in abundance coupled with in-depth horse knowledge! I am a fan indeed".
